James Ryan Van Epps: Tribute to the Georgia Middle Schoo Athletic Association Hall of Fame

We gather in memory of James Ryan (JR) Van Epps Jr. to celebrate an incredible achievement — his induction into the Georgia Middle School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
Some might think it’s too soon to speak of a Hall of Fame career, but anyone who watched JR play knows better. Greatness isn’t measured by the number of years someone plays, but by the impact they make on the game and the people around them.

James Ryan Van Epps

From the very beginning, JR showed a rare blend of grit, talent, and heart. He wasn’t just the hardest hitter or the fastest runner — he was the first to arrive at practice and the last to leave. JR led not by words, but by example, inspiring teammates through his relentless effort and unwavering dedication.

It wasn’t unusual to see JR make a ferocious tackle and then reach out to help his opponent back to their feet. He carried himself with a quiet confidence and maturity that lifted his entire team to greater heights.

JR’s story carries a profound poignancy. His final game took place right here at Hillgrove, on the field of Hawk Stadium — a setting that now holds both pride and memory for all who loved him. In that championship game, JR played with the same heart and determination that defined his short but extraordinary career. His team triumphed over the McEachern Indians with a decisive 20–0 victory, claiming the state title. JR’s performance that day was nothing short of legendary — he was named Defensive MVP after recording 14 tackles and an interception.

Over the course of his 6th-grade season, spanning 11 games, JR amassed an astonishing 120 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, and 2 interceptions. For anyone who knew him, these numbers were not just statistics — they were a reflection of his relentless drive, discipline, and love for the game. That his final moments on the field came in victory, under the lights of Hillgrove, stands as a bittersweet and fitting testament to a player whose passion burned bright and true.

Off the field, JR was every bit the teammate and friend that coaches and parents dream of. He encouraged those who were struggling, celebrated every success, and faced every challenge with grace and humility.

JR’s best teammate, however, was his little brother Harrison — his constant companion both in play and in spirit. Together they spent countless hours practicing and pushing each other to improve. Harrison shared his brother’s passion for the game and proudly led his 4th-grade team to the playoffs as quarterback.

The boys’ biggest fans were their parents, Ryan and Laura, who gave them unwavering love and support through every high and low of competitive sports — and of life. They were followed closely by their devoted grandparents, who cherished every moment spent cheering them on.

This honor stands as a lasting tribute to a young man who embodied the very best of sportsmanship, leadership, and love for the game. JR’s spirit continues to inspire everyone who knew him — teammates, coaches, family, and friends alike.

The Van Epps family is deeply humbled by this recognition and grateful to the Georgia Middle School Athletic Association for bestowing this Hall of Fame award in memory of James Ryan (JR) Van Epps Jr.

Though his time on the field was far too short, his impact will live on forever in the hearts of everyone who knew and loved him.
